pet peeve: when spanish-speaking characters in a TV show express complex concepts in perfectly comprehensible English whenever they need to give clues to the detective, then switch back to Spanish to say like "si, señor" or something

This is the exact opposite of how actual humans speak a language that's not their first language

I don't know if it's all that unrealistic. I know a lot of people who can talk about extremely complex topics in english, and then sound like retards in casual conversation, because they don't usually speak english in casual settings. And they do tend to default to native language for short answers, and have weird vocabulary gaps.
