MH breakthrough

Me: Brain, why are we procrastinating on these important emails?

Brain: I can't figure out quite how to phrase the apology to start the email.

Me: What if I... this will sound weird but... what if we just don't apologize?

Brain: that's crazy talk! They have so many reasons to be mad at us

Me: what if... I just ask for what I want to ask for, and let other people decide whether they're mad at me or not, instead of pre-emptively getting mad at myself on their behalf?

Brain: 🤯

china pol -

I found out that somebody I otherwise love and respect is a Uighur genocide apologist 😱

he said "Uighurs aren't being genocided, if anybody it's Han people who are being genocided because the government only lets us have 1 kid but minorities can have as many as they want"

he's, like, the exact Chinese equivalent of the American fox-news-watcher who thinks "actually WHITE people are the real victims of racism"

This is awful! Why must he uncritically believe CCP propaganda?
😦 😦 😦

i just figured out that Wes Craven and Wes Anderson are two different people and now film director conversations make so much more sense

oh my god, they are using the alien from the star trek episode darmok in meme's were he is describing the meme and it is glorious.

Watched the first episode of "The Expanse", hoping to find a new sci-fi show to get into.

hmmmm... I don't think I like it, it's unrelentingly grim, humorless, and poorly lit.

If I want to see cynical, manipulative, amoral creeps lie and take bribes and torture people, and those are the characters we're supposed to root for because the alternative is even worse.... I'll just read the news

extremely nerdy nerd shit

I was inspired by watching @Thomas paint gaming miniatures on twitch stream, to share some of mine:

these are an army group from the Khador faction in the game Warmachine. Some big stompy steam-powered robots, supported by mechanics and snipers, and led by the character "Karchev the Terrible". These were some of the first minis I painted for this game. It must have been about 2011. They've been in the back of my closet since 2016.

mental health, +

I did a group therapy session for anxiety and one of the things they talked about is "ruminating" which is replaying a social interaction over and over in your head and worrying about whether what you said was OK

I was like "wait, there are people who DON'T do that????"

I'm still ruminating over slightly awkward conversations from 20 years ago.

Somebody should make the stock market into a board game so that I can understand it

I'm very bad at understanding finance stuff but I'm very good at understanding board game rules.

stonks

The stock market seems like black magic to me. Rich people bet money against each other about whether companies will become more or less profitable in the future, OK, i understand that. The magic part is that somehow, this numerical abstraction reaches out and has effects in the real world. Number goes down and somehow people who never participated in the stock market lose their jobs because of it. Companies formerly doing productive work disappear. Spooky action-at-a-distance!

as many of you know, I spent a week at the London XR rebellion, well I have finally written a short article on what I saw, what I feel about it and if XR is even worth it for us in the first place.

stonks

My work slack is talking non-stop about the Reddit / GameStop thing, and it's very hard for me to follow. Somehow this can take down a hedge fund that holds peoples' retirement money? It's like everybody's speaking Ferengi and I don't have a universal translator.

So, in trying to grasp the basics, I'm reading about short-selling now. investopedia.com/terms/s/short

Did you know that there's no upper limit to the amount of money you can lose by doing short-selling? That's right, infinite risk!

fandom discourse

like, of course people's marginalized identities affect how they view fiction, of course more representation is good, I'm not attacking people for wanting that

but if the main thing you're getting upset about is whether more people imagine X and Y fictional characters together instead of imagining Y and Z together?

then you need to, like, take a deep breath and go outside, or something. I don't even know.

fandom discourse

My wife is telling me about the Discourse in the Witcher fandom. I have no horse in the race, I'm just listening and learning

Theory: the worst of fandom discourse happens when people draw on marginalized identities in order to win Ship Wars

like, "my identity is more marginalized than yours, therefore I need the representation more, therefore THIS ship is wrong and THAT ship is right"

before you know it people are getting death threats for drawing Thin Rose Quartz or whatever

You ever think about how weird it is that Middle-Earth contains a perfectly rectangular Evil Zone, surrounded by perfectly rectangular impassible mountains, containing the final boss lair, filled with hostile terrain and deadly monsters, to keep people away from the volcano where the quest ends?

Everything about Mordor is a video-game trope! it's all stuff you'd find in the endgame area of a CRPG for obvious game design reasons! What's it doing in a book written decades before video games???

i showed the neighbor's kids Mars, the moon, and the Orion Nebula through the telescope tonight.

Wish I could get a picture of the nebula, but I haven't found the right camera settings for it yet. Default camera settings make it completely invisible.

While we were looking at the nebula a satellite flew right through the field of view, though, that was cool. Maybe it was the ISS? I don't know how to identify satellites.

My startup company officially broke even in the second half of 2020!

I'm very proud of us! We don't need to get more investment money, we don't need to keep making promises of future growth. We are now funding our own salaries by selling stuff that customers actually want.

Out of all the startup companies I've been part of, this is the first one to reach this point.
